Upon my arrival in Hanoi, my eagerness to immerse myself in the local tea culture led me to begin a quest for traditional tea houses. I searched diligently online and meticulously pinpointed each enchanting tea house that captured my attention. Thus commencing my wild tea journey across East Asia.  (/^▽^)/

What is so special about Vietnamese Tea Houses?

One of the particular differences noted in Vietnam when visiting tea houses is the traditional practice of having a dedicated staff member, often a lady, to expertly prepare and serve your tea. This unique experience allows for a more personalized interaction as you can engage in conversation with the tea server, providing an opportunity to learn more about the tea being served and the local customs surrounding it.

Typically with each visit, you will be treated to a different tea set, which I found to be quite amusing and added an element of delightful surprise to the overall tea-drinking experience.

  1. Hien Minh Tea House

Hien Minh Tea is a traditional Tea house in Hanoi, which was established in 2016 with the vision of protecting, nurturing and processing high quality Vietnamese ancient tea trees. You can read more about them on their website.

My story:

This was my very first tea house! They have a lovely terrace with occasional cat passing by 🐈, and a couple beautiful indoor spaces to sit on the floor.

During my second visit to the tea house, I had the most unforgettable experience when I coincidentally arrived while the owner was celebrating their child's birthday 🥳. The owners were very welcoming, and the children even tried to gift me candy and a flower pin 🌸.

After my relaxing tea session, I engaged in a delightful conversation with the owner. To my pleasant surprise, she extended an invitation for me to explore the second floor of the establishment 🗝️ (as captured in the second photo bellow). As I ascended, I discovered the most serene and aesthetically pleasing space imaginable. It was evident that every item had been thoughtfully curated and positioned by the owner to craft the ideal setting for savoring tea. 🫖

Good to note:
Owners speak English, open for conversations.

But the exploration didn't end there; shortly after my arrival, I began to discover the peculiar and mysterious characteristics that embody the spirit of Hanoi. Even the most neglected corner can hold a beautiful tea house if you are willing to pass trough the most shady alleyways and doorways.💀

Spring 2023, I see the sign to the tea house but where is the entrance?

The entrance to this lovely tea house 🍵 was trough this dark hole. ☠️

2. Thưởng Trà Quán

Look no further if you want to experience an authentic Hanoi vibes that will leave you puzzled 😩 and shocked but then leave you with a lovely cup of tea and a sense of adventure.

Let me explain.

This specific day I decided to hop on a Grab Motorbike 🛵 and make my way to thuong Tra Quan Tea House. However, upon reaching the location, I found myself puzzled about where the entrance to the tea house was‼️

Despite seeing the sign on the third floor, I felt lost. Seeking help from the locals, I was directed towards a dimly lit hallway cluttered with metal debris 🫣. With trembling legs, I bravely made my way down this eerie path while drawing curious stares from the onlookers. 👀

After ascending three flights of stairs, I was greeted by the elegant entrance of the tea house. It was a stark contrast to the unsettling journey I had just endured.

Settling in, I ordered some tea 🫖, engaged in conversation with the waitress, and opened my sketchbook ✏️. I savored my afternoon tea on a spacious balcony adorned with verdant foliage. Reflecting on this unique encounter, I found it to be a truly authentic Vietnamese experience full of charm and wonder.

So far, both of these tea houses have been pretty central in bustling neighborhoods frequented by many.

However, have you ever wondered about the hidden gems tucked away in the areas where only locals reside?

I decided to exploring these lesser-known corners of the city only because I saw some promising photos on google maps. 🫢

Tea Eden tea house hanoi

Spring 2023

3. Tea Eden

This tea place may have only a few reviews 📄, but there is no need to worry. You won't find a single tourist in sight, and the staff exclusively speaks Vietnamese 🇻🇳.

I recommend visiting with a companion, as it can be a bit daunting to be the sole outsider in the neighborhood. The staff tends to keep interactions minimal. However, the tea house boasts a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere that is worth experiencing‼️

There is an abundance of intriguing sights to behold, offering guests the delightful opportunity to steal glimpses into the secrets hidden within neighboring rooms. 🤫

Totally satisfied my naturally inquisitive and curious cat-like personality, evoking a sense of delight and contentment. 😼

I leave you with a map, where I also included a couple more spots for food and drinks.
